Brgy. Sibulan Soon to be Davao’s First Organic Zone

After more than three years of repeated calls to declare Brgy. Sibulan in Toril as an organic agricultural zone, the proposal for the Ordinance is now at the City Council. The proposal has been discussed with Technical Committee on Organic Agriculture members and BLGU during first committee hearing under the Committee on Agriculture led by Councilor Marissa Abella on August 8, 2018. The Sangguniang Barangay of Sibulan has reiterated the call to fast track the approval of the resolution they passed way back in 2014. The City Agriculturist Office also endorsed a draft recommended version of an Executive Order to the City Legal Office last April 26, 2018. But The City Legal Office clarified that under the Organic Agriculture Ordinance, the declaration of an organic zone necessitates an ordinance instead of an Executive Order.

Restos told to source supplies from organic certified farms

DAVAO CITY -Restaurants serving organic meals are urged to source their products from the city’s organic farms that are PGS-(participatory guarantee system) certified. “We are urging these restaurants to buy their organic products from PGS-certified organic farms to ensure that what they are serving are pure organic meals,” said Joy Enriquez, a representative of Go Organic Davao City (GoDC). Enriquez said buying products from PGS-certified sources is highly recommended to as it assures healthy and pesticide-free products.

3 Davao organic resto receive PGS certification

DAVAO CITY — Three organic farm restaurants can now claim that their products are 100 percent organically grown and produce after receiving the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) organic certication. “The Davao PGS brand is a second-party certification process which is recognized by the city’s Organic Agriculture Management Committee (OAMC) and the Department of Agriculture’s Technical Committee on Organic Agriculture (TCOA). When you are certified PGS, this means that your farming process follows the established national standards on organic farming.” said PGS Inspector Alex Betarmos. Go Organic Davao City (GoDC) representative Joy Enriquez  in a statement on Tuesday, August 23, said they welcome this development as “this signals a positive start for the organic food movement under the administration of Mayor Inday Sara.”

Buying at the Organic Market? Look for the PGS Logo

DAVAO CITY – If you are among the market goers at the Friday Organic Market at the Rizal Park here in the city, start looking for the Participatory Guarantee System or PGS logo as the City Agriculturist’s Office is set to enforce organic certification for the organic sellers in the weekly market. Go Organic Davao City (GODC) explained that the PGS logo ascertains the products sold by the seller are certified organic by a peer network of organic farmers. GODC said the PGS branding is part of the implementation of the city’s Organic Agriculture Ordinance and will have long-term benefits for the Dabawenyos and the environment.
