The Ateneo de Davao University’s University Community Engagement and Advocacy Council (UCEAC) recently held the Bergoglio Awards, which recognized the outstanding contributions of different institutions in promoting social justice for the poor, oppressed, marginalized, and excluded. The awards were named after Pope Francis, who is known for his humility and outspoken support for the world’s marginalized people.
The UCEAC awarded four institutions for their efforts in peacebuilding, environmental stewardship, gender equality and human rights, and good governance. One of the recipients, Bantay Bukid Volunteers, was recognized for their role in protecting the Panigan-Tamugan Watershed and received the Award of Excellence in Environmental Stewardship.
During the award ceremony, Bantay Bukid President Roy Cordero expressed his gratitude to the organizers and emphasized the group’s continued efforts to protect and maintain the health of the watershed. The volunteers conduct continuous reforestation efforts by keeping nurseries of native species, planting trees regularly, replacing seedling mortality, and conducting weeding to help seedlings grow to full maturity. They also patrol the watershed to guard forests, wildlife, and their habitats, and rivers against illegal activities, and report the violators to concerned government agencies.
Bantay Bukid’s efforts in environmental stewardship have helped maintain the health of the Panigan-Tamugan Watershed, ensuring clean drinking water for the people of Davao City and providing habitats for various wildlife species. Their work is a testament to the importance of community-driven environmental initiatives and the positive impact they can have on both people and the environment.
