FUNDAMENTALS OF ADVOCACY AND LOBBYING1
Step | Action | Key Points |
---|---|---|
1 | Identify your advocacy issue | • What issues/ concerns do you want to be addressed? (E.g. organic agriculture, disaster risk management, etc.) • Who will benefit? (Quantitative figure is important) |
2 | Develop a relationship with those in influence | • To whom do you need to advocate? • Do you have a relationship with that person or group of people? |
3 | Know what you are lobbying for. Develop community priorities. | • Is this important to the community? • Is there broad-based support? • Is the message being conveyed consistent for everyone to deliver? • Position yourself as a resource to the government. • Become the expert and the “go-to” body when it comes to your community. |
4 | Get support for your advocacy issue. | • Educate: Be careful not to speak on behalf of the people, if you have not engaged them. • Organize: As much as possible, get all stakeholders on your side. |
5 | Engage the media. | • Media is an important component of a lobbying campaign. • Stick to your core messages. |
6 | Assess results. | • Continue, stop or modify strategy. • On-going relationship building/ development. |
