This December 02, 2018 marks the 15th Flight of the Eagles (FOTE), Davao’s annual 40-kilometer traditional cycling event which was started by the late Coun. Leonardo Avila III in 2002.
This event aims to raise funds for the sustainability of Adopt-a-site projects in Talomo-Lipadas, Daliaon, and Malagos watersheds as well as enhance public awareness on the importance of implementing the Davao City Bicycle Ordinance of 2010. The Bicycle Ordinance promotes cycling as a sustainable alternative transportation for Dabawenyos.
On the same day, the 19th Tour of the Fireflies will conclude from its momentous tour from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao traversing Maharlika Highway then, will proceed to the People’s Park to give way to the historical 15th Flight of the Eagles. This coming together of bikers is dubbed as “the Fireflies Meet the Eagles”. Both activities aim to promote the use of bicycles as an alternative means of zero-emission transportation in order to promote good air quality, health and fitness for residents of sustainable cities.
Our theme for this year’s fun ride is “Sikad sa Kinaiyahan: Baha Likayan, Salura ang Uwan”. This is a timely call for action to contribute in addressing the flooding concerns and the strict implementation of the Rainwater Harvesting Ordinance of Davao City.
For this year’s event, we will keep the two easy meandering routes: the 15-kilometer Kalayaan route within the city road circuit at 6:00 AM and the 40-kilometer Pag-asa symbolic solidarity fun ride to Malagos Watershed Park at 7:00 AM. Both routes will start at People’s Park.
This activity is organized by the Interface Development Interventions (IDIS), Inc., Davao City Water District (DCWD), Watershed Management Youth Council (WMYC), Cycle for Life, RaceLink and the Office of Councillor Marissa Abella. Many cycling organizations and cycling enthusiasts from Davao City and Region XI will participate in this event.
