Bem has been brought up by parents who loves spending time in the outdoors. Growing up, Bem was used to riding bike with her parents in the park, taking late afternoon long walks and watching the sunset atop the hill near their house.
Today, Bem recognizes that the environment is still her playground, with mountain climbing, swimming and biking being the activities she enjoys. However, it has now become a complex conundrum of issues and concerns from environmental protection and management of natural resources to human rights — but if addressed, she believes will ensure sustainability and perhaps equality.
Bem brings to IDIS five years of community-based project implementation experience having worked with local and international NGOs including Catholic Relief Services, Save the Children, and Mindanao Land. Bem realized during disaster-risk reduction project implementation that environment protection and watershed management can reduce the vulnerability of the communities.
She admires IDIS’ passion and strong commitment to protect the watersheds of Davao City, ensuring safe and clean water supply for Dabawenyos. Bem’s deep understanding of issues, good leadership skills, and ability to relate well with people from different backgrounds put her in the best position to lead the Advocacy Unit of the organization as Program Coordinator.
She has started her Masters in Environmental and Natural Resource Management from the University of Southeastern Philippines and completed her Bachelor of Arts Major in Speech and Corporate Communication from UP Mindanao.
Bem continues to stay outdoors by taking long meditative walks and barrel down empty roads with her bike named Malaya. Bem also maintains a small herb garden in her home. In the near future, she hopes to climb Mt. Kinabalu, swim in the prestine waters of Coron, Palawan and witness the spectacular aurora borealis.
